Each piece is individually moulded, glazed and kiln fired, giving Zellige its unique movement, surface texture and tonal variation—qualities you will not find in factory made ceramic or porcelain tiles. These handcrafted irregularities are a hallmark of authentic Zellige and are part of its charm and character, rather than imperfections.

Zellige tiles from Tiles of Ezra are 100% handmade. Each tile is crafted using artisanal processes rather than machine production, which results in natural variation in texture, colour and edge detail that defines the range.

Because Zellige is handmade and kiln-fired, shade and tone variation is inherent to the product. Each tile may vary slightly in depth of colour and surface finish, and tiles may differ from samples or showroom displays. This variation is intentional and part of what makes Zellige beautiful and distinctive. Please consult the Specification sheets in our Resources for a visual indication of the level of variation you can expect.

Tiles of Ezra offers Zellige in a range of formats and sheet assemblies, including basic squares and mosaic sheets. Specific sizes and thicknesses vary by design, and details are listed on each product page. Mosaic pieces are typically mounted on epoxy-backed sheets for easier installation. For exact available sizes, refer to the specific Zellige product listings on the site.

All tiles (including epoxy resin pre-assembled mosaics) can be cut using an angle grinder, diamond blade, or a wet saw. We recommend a wet saw for the least amount of tile dust. Consult our Working Safely with Tiles advice.

Tiles of Ezra’s Zellige range does not include factory-made trim pieces in the traditional sense. For exposed edges or transitions, installers typically mitre or carefully cut tiles on site using appropriate wet saw or grinder tools with diamond blades to create a finished edge. Because of the tiles’ handmade variation, this work should be done by an experienced tiler to ensure clean, considered edges.

Authentic handmade Zellige typically has a higher water absorption rate compared to porcelain because it is clay and not fully vitreous. (Porcelain is typically <0.5 % water absorption; clay tiles like Zellige are higher.) For wet areas, this means careful sealing and waterproofing is required, and installation practices must follow wet area standards, including membranes and appropriate grouts/sealers.

Yes, Zellige tiles can be used on floors. Traditionally, they have been installed in palaces, riads, streets and fountains in Morocco since the 13th century and are still standing today, a great testament to their durability. Each product page lists the appropriate tiling usage applications.

Yes, we have had a number of clients successfully install Zellige tiles in pools and fountains. You can see examples of these in our Gallery & on our socials. Please ensure you contract a qualified installer.

We do not conduct slip-resistance testing on our tiles, as this is generally not a requirement for residential installations (with the exception of certain areas such as stairs and ramps, which fall under Australian Standards AS4586).

Because our products are handmade, each tile carries natural variation in surface texture and finish. Slip-resistance testing provides results that apply only to the specific tile submitted, which is suitable for machine-made products with consistent, repeatable surfaces. However, with artisanal tiles, we have found that results can vary significantly even within the same batch, making the data unreliable and not representative of the product as a whole.

For this reason, we do not publish slip ratings and recommend assessing suitability based on the intended application and professional installation guidance.

Moroccan Zellige is a handmade tile, crafted using traditional techniques in Morocco, and variation in tone, texture, size, and surface finish is an inherent and celebrated part of its character. Because of this, mixing batches is generally suitable and often helps create a more natural, blended result.

That said, tonal differences can occur between different productions. We recommend that your installer dry-lay and blend tiles from multiple cartons or batches prior to installation to achieve a balanced and cohesive finish.

If your project requires a more controlled or uniform look, we recommend speaking with our team prior to ordering so we can guide you accordingly.

We strongly recommend ordering a sufficient quantity from the same batch, including a buffer of between 10-20% for cuts, waste and future repairs. This ensures visual consistency across your entire installation and avoids the risk of mismatched tones or finishes.
