Crystalline Silica in Tiles: What You Actually Need to Know

If you've followed the news around engineered stone bench-tops over the last couple of years, you've probably heard the term "crystalline silica" - usually alongside words like silicosis, cancer, and ban. It's serious, and it's fair to wonder what it means for the tiles on your floors and walls. So we want to talk about it properly: what crystalline silica actually is, why it turns up in ceramic tile at all, what we found when we tested our own ranges, how tile compares to materials like engineered stone and natural stone, and what "safe" really means when it comes to buying and installing tile.

The short version: crystalline silica is a naturally occurring part of almost all ceramic and porcelain tile, it is not unique to us or to any one brand, and the tiles sitting in your home once they're installed are not a health hazard. The risk is real, but it's specific — it lives in the cutting and grinding stage, not in the finished product. Here's the detail.

What Is Crystalline Silica?

Silica (silicon dioxide, or SiO₂) is one of the most common minerals on earth. It's a core ingredient of sand, granite, clay, and countless building materials. "Crystalline" refers to the specific molecular structure it takes in forms like quartz and cristobalite - as opposed to "amorphous" silica, which has a disordered structure and is not classified the same way from a health standpoint.

On its own, and left alone, crystalline silica isn't something you need to worry about - it's in the ground under your feet and in the walls of most brick and stone buildings. The health risk arises when work such as cutting, grinding or drilling generates fine respirable crystalline silica dust that can be inhaled. Risk increases with the concentration and duration of exposure—usually in an industrial or trade setting. That distinction between "contains silica" and "generates airborne silica dust" is the single most important thing to understand in this whole topic, and we'll come back to it.

Yes, Virtually All Ceramic Tile Contains Crystalline Silica

This is the part that surprises people: it isn't a defect, and it isn't specific to us. Ceramic and porcelain tile bodies are made primarily from clay, quartz (silica) sand, and feldspar, fired at high temperature. Quartz is added deliberately in most tile formulations because it controls shrinkage and gives the fired body its strength and stability. Many natural clays also contain some silica to begin with. The result is that essentially every ceramic or porcelain tile on the market - regardless of brand, country of origin, or price point - contains some level of crystalline silica in its fired body. Many manufacturers disclose crystalline silica content through product safety information, and we choose to provide Safety Data Sheets for our ranges as good practice. Safe Work Australia does not require manufacturers to provide an SDS for solid products such as tiles, but does require relevant information about crystalline silica content, associated RCS risks and safe-work precautions to be provided.

We think this is worth saying plainly rather than glossing over, because the honest answer to "does your tile contain silica?" is yes - Crystalline silica is commonly found in ceramic and porcelain tiles and is not unique to Tiles of Ezra or any one manufacturer. The meaningful questions are how much, and what that means in practice.

Both quartz and cristobalite are classified under the GHS as Carcinogenicity Category 1A and STOT RE 1 (inhalation) - meaning they carry the standard hazard statements "may cause cancer by inhalation" and "causes damage to lungs through prolonged or repeated exposure by inhalation" when present as inhalable dust. That classification applies to the mineral itself, in every product that contains it, including natural stone, engineered stone, bricks, pavers, mortar, and tile. It reflects the hazard of airborne silica dust generated during processing - it is not a statement that the finished, glazed, fired tile sitting in a box is dangerous to have in your home.

How Does Tile Compare to Other Materials?

Crystalline silica content varies enormously by material, and this is where the recent engineered stone ban is genuinely useful context. Here's how ceramic and porcelain tile stack up against other common surfaces, based on published industry and regulatory sources:

Engineered stone benchtops, panels and slabs were prohibited in Australia after work with these products was found to pose an unacceptable health risk to workers, particularly from exposure to respirable crystalline silica generated during fabrication and processing. Many engineered stone products contained very high levels of crystalline silica, which contributed to that risk. That combination is what drove the wave of severe, accelerated silicosis cases in stone benchtop fabricators over the past decade. Ceramic and porcelain tile sit in a materially different place: silica content is generally lower, and tile is manufactured, cut, and installed differently - most cuts are shallower, on thinner material, and increasingly done with pre-cut sizing or wet equipment. It's a difference of degree and of process, not a claim that tile carries zero risk - which is why the same core safe-work principles still apply.

Is Silica in an Installed Tile Actually Dangerous?

No - not in the way most people picture it. Once a tile is fired, glazed, and installed on your floor or wall, the crystalline silica within it is locked into a solid, dense ceramic body. Walking on it, showering next to it, or simply having it in your home does not release silica dust. There is no established exposure pathway from an intact, installed tile to the person living with it.

An intact, installed tile does not ordinarily create a respirable crystalline silica exposure. The risk arises when the material is mechanically processed — for example by cutting, drilling, grinding or sanding — in a way that generates respirable dust small enough to reach deep into the lungs. This is the same reason tilers, not homeowners, are the group at occupational risk, and it's exactly the population that Australian work health and safety regulation is aimed at protecting. 

How to Install Tile Safely

Safe work with any crystalline-silica-containing material - tile included - follows the same hierarchy of controls used across the construction industry, from most to least effective:

  • Reduce cutting in the first place - ordering pre-cut pieces, choosing layouts and formats that minimise on-site cuts, and planning cuts before starting a job.
  • Cut wet, not dry where practicable — wet saws and water-fed equipment help suppress dust at the source and prevent it becoming airborne.
  • Use on-tool dust extraction or local exhaust ventilation for any cutting that can't be done wet.
  • Work outdoors or in well-ventilated areas, and never dry-sweep tile dust - use wet clean-up or an appropriate vacuum instead.
  • Wear a properly fitted P2 or P3 respirator as backup protection during cutting or grinding - not as a substitute for the controls above, which is how regulators intend it to be used.

If you're engaging a tiler, it's entirely reasonable to ask what dust controls they use - most professional installers already work this way as standard practice, because it's required of them, not because a particular tile is unusually hazardous.

The Regulatory Picture

The current Australian workplace exposure standard for respirable crystalline silica is 0.05 mg/m³ as an eight-hour time-weighted average. From 1 December 2026, Australia will transition to the Workplace Exposure Limits framework; the RCS limit will remain at 0.05 mg/m³. Materials containing at least 1% crystalline silica - which includes bricks, blocks, pavers, tiles, and mortar, not just engineered stone - fall under specific crystalline silica substance (CSS) requirements; in NSW, for example, a dedicated CSS framework covering these materials took effect from 1 September 2024, sitting alongside the separate national prohibition on engineered stone that began 1 July 2024. Tile was not banned, and isn't subject to the same prohibition as engineered stone - but it is squarely covered by the general duty to control silica dust exposure at work, and that's a duty on installers and employers, not on the tile itself.

The Bottom Line

Crystalline silica is a normal, disclosed component of ceramic and porcelain tile, ours included, and virtually everyone else's. The percentages vary by range, which is exactly why we test and publish them rather than making a blanket claim. Once a tile is installed, it presents no meaningful exposure risk to the people living around it. The real risk sits with the cutting and shaping process, and it is well understood and very manageable with wet cutting, extraction, and basic PPE, the same standard practices reputable tilers already use every day.
