MOROCCAN ZELLIGE
Understanding Moroccan Zellige
Everything You Need to Know About Authentic Handmade Moroccan Zellige Tiles

Moroccan Zellige
Moroccan Zellige is one of the world's oldest and most celebrated artisan tile traditions. Handmade in Morocco using techniques passed from one generation to the next for centuries, every Zellige tile reflects the skill, patience and craftsmanship of the artisans who continue to preserve this remarkable craft today.
Unlike machine-made ceramics, no two Moroccan Zellige tiles are ever identical. Subtle movement in colour, texture, glaze and shape are not imperfections — they are the very characteristics that give authentic Zellige its warmth, depth and timeless beauty.
At Tiles of Ezra, we believe understanding how Zellige tiles are made is just as important as choosing the right colour. Through years of collaboration with our artisan partners in Fez, we have developed the Tiles of Ezra Standard — a philosophy of continual refinement that protects the authenticity of handmade craftsmanship while delivering exceptional quality, consistency and confidence to every project.
Whether you are specifying a boutique hotel, designing your forever home, or selecting a splashback, this guide has been created to help you better understand authentic Moroccan Zellige and the standards behind every Tiles of Ezra collection.

What Is Moroccan Zellige?
Moroccan Zellige is a handcrafted glazed clay tile traditionally produced in and around the city of Fez, Morocco. Made entirely by hand using natural clay, hand-mixed glazes and traditional kilns, the craft of authentic Zellige has remained largely unchanged for centuries.
Each Zellige tile begins as clay sourced from local Moroccan quarries before being hand-moulded, dried naturally under the Moroccan sun, glazed by hand and fired in traditional kilns. Once fired, every tile is individually cut into its final shape by skilled artisans, creating the distinctive organic edges and handcrafted character that define authentic Moroccan Zellige.
Unlike factory-produced ceramics, Zellige celebrates variation. Every tile carries subtle differences in colour, surface texture, glaze movement and size, ensuring every Zellige installation feels unique and full of life.
Authentic Moroccan Zellige
WHY AUTHENTIC ZELLIGE CAN ONLY BE MADE IN MOROCCO
While many products around the world imitate the appearance of Zellige, the true craft is inseparable from the country — its natural clay, its traditional kilns, and the generations of artisans who continue to preserve this centuries-old tradition.
From the beginning, our vision has never been to reproduce Zellige elsewhere or simplify the way it is made. Instead, we have chosen to work directly alongside Moroccan artisans, honouring traditional manufacturing methods while continually refining the quality, consistency and design of every collection.
For more than twelve years, Tiles of Ezra has returned to Morocco year after year, building long-standing relationships with our artisan partners and developing exclusive Zellige collections inspired by both traditional craftsmanship and contemporary living.

How Authentic Zellige Is Made
HOW ITS MADE

#1
Natural Moroccan Clay
Every Zellige tile begins with natural clay sourced from local Moroccan quarries. Rich in minerals, this clay gives authentic Zellige its distinctive character while ensuring every tile remains unique.

#2
Hand Moulded
The clay is carefully pressed into individual moulds entirely by hand. Because every tile is formed manually, slight variation in size and shape becomes part of the beauty of the finished Zellige installation.

#3
Sun Dried
Rather than being rapidly dried in industrial ovens, Zellige tiles are naturally dried beneath the Moroccan sun. This slower process forms an important part of the traditional manufacturing method.

#4
Hand Beaten
Before glazing, artisans carefully beat every tile by hand using traditional wooden tools. This process helps remove air pockets while creating a strong, stable clay body before firing.

#5
Hand Glazed
Every Zellige glaze is individually mixed and applied by hand. Unlike modern manufacturing, glaze colours are not created through automated systems or computer-controlled recipes — they are developed through generations of knowledge, experience and craftsmanship, producing remarkable depth, tonal movement and individuality throughout every batch.

#6
Kiln Fired
The tiles are fired inside traditional kilns, where heat naturally varies throughout the chamber. This creates the subtle tonal variation and movement that make authentic Moroccan Zellige unlike any machine-made tile.

#7
Hand Cut
Once fired, every Zellige tile is individually hand-cut into its final shape. Whether a square tile, Bejmat, Kit Kat or intricate mosaic, every piece is cut by skilled artisans using traditional methods before being carefully sorted by hand.

#8
Precision-Cut Basics
For our Zellige basics, each 10 x 10cm (4 x 4 inch) piece is carefully marked using blue ink guidelines to define the exact cutting lines before being meticulously cut down into perfect squares by hand. This precise, methodical process ensures every Zellige basic tile holds a consistent, true square shape, while still retaining the subtle handmade character that defines authentic Moroccan Zellige.

#9
Mosaic Assembly
For our Zellige mosaic sheets, every piece is meticulously assembled by hand using custom moulds, ensuring uniform grout widths and consistent spacing so that every sheet matches perfectly with the next. Each sheet is then bonded using the highest grade adhesives, keeping the mosaic straight, flat and free from warping.

Inside the Tiles of Ezra Standard
Beautiful tiles are everywhere. Standards are not.
Over more than a decade, we have worked alongside our artisan partners to continually refine every stage surrounding the handmade Zellige process. While the traditional methods remain unchanged, our commitment to quality extends far beyond the kiln.
INSIDE THE STANDARD
A-Grade Selection
Only the Finest Tiles Become Tiles of Ezra. Not every tile produced becomes a Tiles of Ezra tile.
While other suppliers include B, C and D grade Zellige within their offering, when you choose Tiles of Ezra, you only ever receive A-Grade quality.
Every tile is individually inspected by hand and carefully sorted to ensure it meets the Tiles of Ezra Standard before becoming part of our Zellige collections. Tiles that fall outside our acceptable A quality standards are removed, allowing us to preserve authentic handcrafted variation while delivering exceptional consistency.
Multi-Stage Quality Control
Quality is checked at multiple stages throughout production...
not just once at the end. Tiles are first inspected as they come out of the kiln, checked again during sorting and grading, and reviewed a final time as they're packed into cartons ready for export. At each of these stages, tiles are assessed for colour consistency, surface quality, shape and overall grade, allowing any tile that falls outside the Tiles of Ezra Standard to be identified and removed before it ever leaves Morocco. This layered approach means quality isn't left to a single checkpoint — it's built into every step of the process, giving you far greater confidence and consistency in the tiles that reach your project.
Rested Before Packing: Time Improves Quality
Tilesofezra Zellige is given time to rest for a minimum of 2 weeks before final inspection and packing.
This allows naturally occurring lime pops to reveal themselves so they can be identified and removed, significantly reducing the number that reach our clients while preserving the authentic character of the material.
Exclusive Manufacturing Partners
Rather than sourcing from multiple factories based on availability, we work exclusively with carefully selected artisan partners who share our commitment to craftsmanship, consistency and continual improvement. These long-standing relationships allow us to refine quality together, year after year.
Custom Colour Development: Designed, Not Selected
Every Tiles of Ezra Zellige colour begins through collaboration between our design team and master Moroccan glaze makers. Rather than selecting colours from an existing catalogue, each glaze is carefully developed and refined over multiple trials until it achieves the depth, movement and character that define the Tiles of Ezra aesthetic.
Exclusive Mosaic Designs
Many of our Zellige mosaics have been developed exclusively for Tiles of Ezra. Working alongside master cutters in Morocco, we continue to create new layouts, formats and patterns that honour traditional craftsmanship while expanding the possibilities of authentic Zellige.
Lead Tested
Every Zellige collection undergoes independent lead testing to ensure it meets international standards, giving architects, designers and homeowners confidence when specifying our products.
Technical Support
Every collection is supported by comprehensive installation guides, technical documentation, care recommendations and educational resources, developed to help achieve the best possible outcome on site.
