What is Moroccan Zellige?
Moroccan Zellige is a traditional handmade clay tile originating from Fez, Morocco, individually hand-cut, hand-glazed and kiln-fired by artisans using techniques passed down through generations. Unlike machine-made ceramic or porcelain tiles, authentic Zellige embraces variation — slight differences in size, thickness, colour, glaze movement and surface texture aren't imperfections, they're what give the material its depth, warmth and character.

What makes Tiles of Ezra Zellige different?
Our Zellige is produced to the Tiles of Ezra Standard, a multi-stage quality process that includes individual tile inspection, removal of excessive lime pops, colour consistency checks, a waiting period after firing to let natural lime pops reveal themselves, and hand sorting before export. Rather than removing the handmade nature of Zellige, this process preserves its beauty while improving consistency and reducing waste during installation.

Are your tiles handmade?
Yes — every Zellige tile is 100% handcrafted by skilled Moroccan artisans using traditional methods rather than machine production. No two tiles will ever be identical, and that individuality is exactly what makes authentic Zellige so special.

Where are your Zellige tiles made?
All Tiles of Ezra Moroccan Zellige is handmade in Fez, Morocco — the birthplace of authentic Zellige craftsmanship for over 1,000 years.

Are your tiles authentic Moroccan Zellige?
Yes — our Zellige is produced in Morocco using traditional clay, hand-cutting methods and artisan glazing techniques.

Colours & Variation

Why do the tiles all look different from one another?
Because they're handmade — each tile is individually glazed and fired, creating natural variation in shade, tone, surface movement, gloss level, edge detail and thickness. These variations create the beautiful movement Zellige is famous for.

How much colour and shade variation should I expect?
High variation should always be expected, since each production, firing and batch will naturally differ, and individual tiles within the same carton will vary too. We recommend blending tiles from multiple boxes during installation to achieve the most balanced appearance.

Will my order look exactly like the sample?
Not exactly — samples demonstrate the colour family and finish, but every production run is unique. Lighting, surrounding materials and the handmade nature of Zellige mean every installation develops its own character.

Do your tiles come in a full colour range, and can I order custom colours?
Yes — our curated Zellige range spans soft neutrals through to rich jewel tones, and many colours can also be custom produced subject to minimum order quantities. Our Moroccan Mosaic collection can additionally be produced in any custom colour combination — contact your local Tiles of Ezra retailer for current minimums and lead times.

Can colours vary between different orders?
Yes — because every production is handmade, colour variation between manufacturing runs is completely normal. If your project may need additional material later, we strongly recommend ordering enough upfront, including a 10–20% allowance for cuts, waste and future repairs.

Sizing

What sizes and thicknesses are available?
Tiles of Ezra offers Zellige in a range of formats and sheet assemblies, including basic squares and mosaic sheets, with mosaic pieces typically mounted on epoxy-backed sheets for easier installation. Exact sizes and thicknesses vary by design — refer to the specification sheet on each product listing for details.

Installation

Can Zellige be installed on floors?
Yes — authentic Moroccan Zellige has been used for centuries throughout palaces, riads, courtyards and streets across Morocco, and it remains a durable choice for floors today. Check each product's specification sheet to confirm its recommended applications.

Can Zellige be installed on walls?
Absolutely — walls remain one of the most popular applications for Zellige, thanks to the way natural light reflects across the handmade glaze.

Can Zellige be used in showers and wet areas?
Yes — when installed by an experienced tiler using appropriate waterproofing, adhesives, grout and sealers, Zellige performs beautifully in showers and other wet areas.

Can Zellige be used outdoors, on patios or pool surrounds?
Yes — many of our Zellige collections are suitable for exterior walls, courtyards, patios, pool surrounds and facades when professionally installed. Always consult your installer regarding your project's specific environmental conditions.

Can Zellige be used in or around pools and fountains?
Yes — authentic Moroccan Zellige has been used in pools and fountains for centuries, and we've supplied it for numerous pools, spas and fountains across Australia, the US and internationally. Professional installation and a suitable waterproofing system are essential.

Can the tiles be cut with standard tools?
Yes — Zellige (including epoxy-backed mosaic sheets) can be cut using a wet saw, an angle grinder with a diamond blade, or a tile saw fitted with a diamond blade. A wet saw generally gives the cleanest finish while minimising dust.

Do you sell trim pieces, or how are exposed edges finished?
Our Zellige collections don't include factory-made trim pieces — exposed edges and transitions are typically mitred or finished with carefully cut tiles on site by an experienced tiler, to maintain the authentic handmade appearance.

Performance & Durability

Do Zellige tiles need sealing?
Most handmade Zellige should be sealed, with the appropriate sealer depending on the location, finish and intended use. Always follow the recommendations in the relevant product specification.

What is a lime pop?
A lime pop is a naturally occurring characteristic of handmade clay products, where small particles of lime in the clay expand after firing and create tiny chips or pinholes in the glaze. As part of the Tiles of Ezra Standard, every tile is held after firing and individually inspected so naturally occurring lime pops can develop before packing, allowing us to remove affected tiles wherever possible.

Are Zellige tiles durable?
Yes — many traditional Zellige installations throughout Morocco have remained in service for hundreds of years, including in palaces, riads, streets and fountains dating back to the 13th century. When correctly installed and maintained, Zellige is an exceptionally durable material suitable for both residential and many areas within commercial projects.

What is the water absorption rate of Zellige?
Because Zellige is handmade from natural clay rather than fully vitreous like porcelain, it has a higher water absorption rate — porcelain typically sits under 0.5%, while clay tiles like Zellige are higher. This is why correct waterproofing, sealing and installation are essential, particularly in wet areas.

Do your tiles have slip ratings?
We don't publish formal slip ratings, as testing one handmade tile can't reliably represent an entire production — each tile carries natural variation in surface texture that makes standardised results unreliable. For residential projects we recommend discussing suitability with your installer; for commercial applications (or areas covered by AS4586 such as stairs and ramps), please contact our team for project-specific advice.

Ordering & Samples

Do you provide samples before purchase?
Yes — we encourage ordering samples before making your final selection, since viewing tiles in your own lighting is the best way to appreciate their true colour and handmade character.

Can I mix batches of Zellige?
Yes — blending cartons and batches is generally suitable and often produces the most natural, balanced result, since variation is an inherent and celebrated part of Zellige's character. If consistency is critical, we recommend ordering all material from the same batch upfront and allowing an additional 10–20% for cuts, waste and future repairs.

Will my tile match my sample?

While Tiles of Ezra maintains high levels of colour consistency and batch quality control, true Zellige is a handmade product, and some tonal variation between batches should always be expected. Samples are intended to show the overall colour family and finish rather than serve as an exact match, so unless your sample has been cut from the same stock batch as your order, please expect some natural variation between the sample and your final tiles. This is a normal characteristic of authentic, handmade Zellige rather than a quality issue, and it's part of what gives each installation its own individual character

How much extra tile should I order?
We recommend ordering an additional 10–20% beyond your measured requirement, depending on the complexity of the installation. This allowance covers cuts, breakages, pattern matching, and future repairs or additions.

Why is there a minimum order quantity for custom colours?
Each custom colour requires an entirely separate handmade production run, so minimum order quantities ensure the process remains commercially viable while maintaining the craftsmanship expected of authentic Moroccan Zellige.

Can I order replacement tiles years later?
You can, however exact colour matching can't be guaranteed due to the handmade nature of every production run. We always recommend purchasing enough material during your original order to accommodate future repairs or additions.

How should my installer lay the tiles?
Because every tile varies slightly in size, thickness and glaze movement, installers should blend tiles from multiple cartons, dry-lay sections before fixing, adjust grout joints as required, and avoid selecting tiles one carton at a time. Embracing natural variation — rather than trying to force a perfectly uniform appearance — produces the most authentic and visually balanced result.
